The RNLI are now one of the main employers of lifeguards in our area, covering the majority of our closest beaches such as Dawlish Warren, Bantham, Sandy Bay, Exmouth and Teignmouth. With jobs running from roughly Easter until the end of September (each beach varies).

To be a paid lifeguard you must hold a valid qualification, either the SLSGB Beach Lifeguard or RLSS awards. As the TBSLSC is affiliated to the Surf Life Saving GB group, we train to their standards and for their examinations.

The awards are very similar and require knowledge of the ocean and the environment, first aid and resuscitation (CPR) skills, as well as the ability to use lifesaving equipment such as Rescue boards and tubes. There are also physical fitness tests that require a run over 200 metres in 40 seconds, a timed swim of 400 metres (16 lengths) in 7:30 minutes and a 50 metre over and under swim.
